Again, this idea is a Hollywood creation to spark the imagination of its audiences. I saw this in the now cult comedy The Office where one of the characters went to a hypnotist and was hypnotized. While under hypnosis the Hypnotist dies. This scenario plays on the fears and lack of knowledge of the general public. In reality, if for some reason the Hypnotherapist were to leave the room and not come back the client would do one of two things: They would simply come out of trance and leave the room or they would fall asleep for a short time, wake up feeling refreshed and leave the room.
Most people spend a good part of their day in some form of trance and there have been occasions that I have had to count someone up from trance before working with them. Occasionally you can find a report here or there online about some kids getting "stuck" in hypnosis. Usually this means that the hypnotist isn't skilled enough to bring the people back or the people are choosing to stay in this peaceful state of total relaxation longer then the hypnotist anticipated after trying to bring them up. In any event, because hypnosis is a natural state, no one stays in trance for long. #hypnosisworks @ronlakehypnosis

I have had a couple of clients over the years delay coming to see me because of this exact fear. They were afraid of losing control. Of what, I never understood, but this is another Hollywood myth. You always have control, and you can always hear what's going on as long as you choose to. Hypnosis is nothing but a state of relaxed deep focus. It is a natural state that you enter at least twice a day (while waking up and while falling asleep), and likely much more often than that. Studies have shown that the average person goes into a trance state an average of 7 times a day. If at any time you are in a trance and you wish to be fully awake, you can either shake yourself out of it or you can just count to yourself "1 - 2- 3" and open your eyes.
It is no different then being in a strong daydream. So set your worries aside about losing control and get the help you need to make the changes in your life you want. Let me guess: you've seen a stage show where a hypnotist made people do all these crazy things. Or, perhaps you have ideas from Hollywood's movies and TV. The stage hypnotist carefully selects his subjects (watch how many volunteers he has sat down), and he chooses people he knows WILL bark like a dog. They will because somewhere inside them is a part that loves to entertain. And they will do it because, deep down inside, they don't believe there is anything wrong with barking like a dog. These people are not faking being under a trance. They are simply complying with suggestions made by the hypnotist.
Hypnosis cannot make you do something that is against your morals or ethics. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis, in truth, and no hypnotist can make you do something that you really don't want to do. That's why some people can be hypnotized to stop smoking and yet they still smoke. You have to want the change, agree with the change, and then hypnosis is an instrument for helping make that change better, faster, and permanent. Since beginning my Practice years ago and still today I always get the same questions about Hypnosis, What is Hypnosis? How does it work? and What is it used for? along with another 150 other questions. I decided that it might be fun to create a blog to answer many of the questions that I get to answer every day so that not only the people I talk to in person but anyone who might want to know around the internet can learn too. Hypnosis is a very powerful technique that helps people in many aspects of life. It could be mental, emotional, physical and even spiritual. So as this blog progresses, feel free to comment, ask questions and share your input and experiences if you have them. Always remember to be kind, respect each other and be friends. I will write in straight forward, simple language and try to share to the best of my ability. Look, I know we are all busy these days and really just want a quick answer to a simple question. If the answer intrigues you, I encourage you to do deeper research to satisfy any lingering curiosity. Can you say "Okay Google, Tell me more about..." I hope the info is useful to you. Many people who do know something about hypnosis, recall a Stage show they attended in High School or College, where the Stage Hypnotist made people do silly things in front of a crowd as in barking like a dog or clucking like a chicken. I don't think any Stage Hypnotists do this anymore but the stigma still exists. Those shows are fun and quite entertaining. Yet I think all too often, they create a fear in the skeptical person about hypnosis' ability to solve real world problems and can alienate a certain part of the population from seeking out the help they could actually get from hypnosis. So one of the first questions I get from people when they find out what I do and are Oh So Impressed.....lol Is what is Hypnosis? And of course I immediately recite the dictionary definition leaving them stunned, amazed and in awe of my knowledge. hyp·no·sis hipˈnōsəs/ noun noun: hypnosis
Okay...no I don't leave them in awe nor would I ever recite a dictionary definition like this....lol Basically; It is a trance state characterized by deep relaxation, heighten focus on a single subject and a extreme suggestibility. In this mental state it is also easy for the imagination to be more active as well. The word "Hypno" meaning sleep refers only to the sleep -like state the subject is in. At no time is the subject actually asleep. While the subject may be so relaxed they choose not o open their eyes or move their body they are still very much awake and alert the while session. I often tell those who don't know that the feeling is much like a day dream, where you are aware of everything around you but you are so focused on your thought that everything else seems to move to the background. Think of the last time you were engrossed in a great book or an exciting movie. Hypnosis is a very natural phenomena. Everyone goes into hypnosis at least twice a day. Once just before you go to sleep and once just before you are fully awake in the morning. Studies have shown that the average person actually goes into some form of hypnosis or trance at least 7-8 a day. Think back to that movie or book or remember that time you go into you care to go somewhere and suddenly realizing you were there but don't' recall the trip at all. We call that "Highway Hypnosis" |
